Cristiano Ronaldo: A Tale of Football`s Fine Wine by Oheneba II
This was not Cristiano`s night. Fast forward four years and a few days and one would be
pleasantly surprised to find our man Cristiano, football´s fine wine, lifting the European trophy with
his beloved Portugal.
What he lacked in ability, due to natural deterioration, he made up for in leadership skill,
and like fine wine one could say he had aged to become better. He had become a leader of men.
This clearly showed in the quarter final against Poland when he managed to convince Joao Moutinho
to step forward for a penalty* that he would have otherwise refused to take.
*=Joao Moutinho took Portugal’s first semi-final penalty and had it saved by Iker Casillas back in
Euro 2012.
His leadership and hunger for an international trophy was there for all to see in the final
when a knee injury threatened to rule him out of the game after a bad tackle from France`s Payet,
yet twice he was taken off the field, and twice he came back to play through injury. But it was not to
be, and he had to be substituted in the first half. He got bandaged up and cast aside his role of
footballer to become an assistant coach/ leader from the touchline alongside his coach Fernando
Santos. He was barking orders left, right, and centre. Motivating those who needed motivation, for
example eventual goal scorer, Eder.
I cannot help but feel happy for the man. The little boy from Madeira who could, and DID.
The overachiever. And so like fine wine, our man got better and more complete with age. It does feel
ironic to compare one who doesn’t drink to wine, but his own brilliance can only be compared in
analogy to that of fine wine. Who knows what Russia 2018 may hold for him? Congratulations to
Cristiano Ronaldo on finally making it where even the legendary sea captains of centuries past or
modern era golden generations of football could not: international football Glory.
A congratulatory tale of the man who aged like fine wine.
The greatest proponent of human civilisation
and advancement has been and will always
be the pursuit of personal glory.
