How to Tumblr. All you need to know (90steens)

As you all know, tumblr is a micro-blogging platform which host millions of teenagers who are just like us. I personally registered on tumblr 2012 which is three years ago and I'm still currently existing there. Its like an unbreakable vow and once you sign up, you're there forever. Okay lets cut to the chase; Heres what I thought of during my first week of tumblr:
- How do they do those sick GIFs?
- How do they make those transparent photos?
- Why do people have so many notes on their post?
- How do I use this website?
- Where do people get their themes from and why are they so pretty?
And the last question of all
- How do I get followers?
I was so lost and followed a bunch of science and meme bloggers. I was literally reblogging everything I see on my dashboard. I concluded with "This place is totes boring" so I left there for like 3 months or more and finally I came back.
So then, I unfollowed all the science and meme blogs and was determined to make myself some followers. I followed a bunch of tumblr blogs with nice themes who reblog nice photos and then my reblogging spam returned. (Plus liking every post I find interesting). I learnt about self promoting and decided to do just that. Writing captions on photos which I had no credit for (I was desperate) It worked for a while but then people got annoyed with me and I lost some followers (although I gained enough) plus writing captions on every photo then was tiring.
I googled how to get followers on tumblr and found out a platform called tumblrplug where you can promote yourself to a thousand other blogs. I gained 3000+ followers from using this site but it was also getting boring so I went by another technique.
I thought of changing my style of blogging and stopped reblogging almost everything I saw on my dashboard ( I still reblog from my dashboard though) and went to black and white. I change again from that to personal photos and changed again to explicit pale photos. Some famous categories are humor, fashion, pale, personal, vertical and nature and less famous ones like aesthetic, indie and grunge. Ever since I was blogging in a typical categories, I was also gaining followers who were in the same category as me.
Another problem was that when I'm away, I'm not blogging and people don't want to follow an inactive blog. Once when it was examination week so I couldn't go on tumblr for 2 weeks so my blog was inactive. When I came back, I lost a huge amount of followers. I panicked. Summer vac was also around the corner so I won't have much time on tumblr. A friend of mine told me about the tumblr queue where it automatically post for you. I used it for a while until I wasn't satisfied with the 300 post limit. Then, I noticed another plugin called qplus where I can queue up to a limit of 600 posts. So I went for my summer vac without worrying about my blog being inactive.
Night blogging. Everyone on tumblr night blogs. It seemed fun at first until you had to go through the manual reblogging system. It happened that I got notified on the xkit tumblr addon which improved the reblog system and also did a lot of great stuff like customizing your dashboard, sorting out tags in your archive etc.
Since then, tumblr as been much easier and I could spend up to 8 hours on it without even realizing.
Also on themes. Formally I chose a theme from the tumblr theme garden which was ugly as hell. In fact, themes from the original tumblr theme garden are ugly as fuck and I sure don't recommend them to you. ( they don't make you rad. ) Themes play a major role in a bloggers life. If your theme is ugly, you can assure that people won't be interested in what content you have therefore ignoring your blog. Some of the most popular tumblr theme makers who make themes at their own free will are MXDVS, atlasdesigns, themesbykaty, joshthemes, isaacthemes etc.
Once you've found a pretty rad theme, you are ready to go. Finding a theme is really difficult though as there are a thousand other themes to choose from. Plus getting followers doesn't take a day or two more like a year or two.
People use tumblr for all sorts of stuff. Some even use it for their personal websites. I use it for fun. Its up to you. Happy blogging!
